Stephen Sondheim’s acclaimed musical thriller Sweeney Todd is returning to the Melbourne stage this September, with Soundworks Productions presenting a bold new interpretation at Chapel Off Chapel.
Running from 11 to 20 September, the production reimagines the classic tale through the lens of Grand Guignol theatre, placing audiences inside a grim Victorian London where corruption, inequality and revenge collide. Set within the intimate surrounds of Chapel Off Chapel, the season promises an immersive experience that draws viewers into the dark world of one of musical theatre’s most unforgettable antiheroes.
Set in 19th-century London, the story follows Benjamin Barker, who returns home after 15 years in an Australian penal colony under the new identity of Sweeney Todd. Seeking revenge against the corrupt judge who destroyed his life, Todd’s quest soon descends into a chilling killing spree, aided by the resourceful Mrs. Lovett and her struggling pie shop.
Director Benjamin Samuel said the production embraces the bleak atmosphere of Sondheim’s masterpiece.
“This is probably the darkest musical by Stephen Sondheim,” he said.
“It’s set against the grimy backdrop of London during the throes of the Industrial Revolution and this production is rooted in a single governing image: Victorian London as a machine. Not just a metaphor for a machine, but all characters functioning as part of one. Every set element, every prop, every transition carries the logic of industrial manufacture.”
The production marks the latest offering from the multi-award-winning Soundworks Productions, which has earned a reputation for ambitious interpretations of classic musicals. Featuring a cast of Melbourne musical theatre performers and a creative team focused on bringing audiences closer to the action, the season promises an intense and unforgettable theatrical experience.
