One of the world’s most beloved musicals is returning to Melbourne, with Disney’s The Lion King set to roar back onto the stage at the Regent Theatre from Thursday 25 March 2027.
The six-time Tony Award-winning production will make its Melbourne comeback for the first time since 2015, bringing its spectacular combination of puppetry, costumes, music and storytelling to a new generation of audiences.
The Lion King has now been experienced by more than 127 million people worldwide, making it one of the most successful stage productions ever created. The Australian tour is also proving hugely popular, with the current Sydney season becoming the fastest-selling show in the history of the Capitol Theatre.
The production has also recorded the highest-selling musical presale in Queensland Performing Arts Centre history, suggesting Melbourne audiences will want to get in early.
Leading the Melbourne cast is Buyi Zama as Rafiki, reprising the iconic role for a third Australian tour after previously appearing in the 2003 and 2013 productions. She will be joined by Nick Afoa as Mufasa, who made his theatrical debut as Simba 12 years ago.
The principal cast also includes Daniel Frederiksen as Scar, Benn Welford as Zazu, Aphiwe Nyezi as Simba, Emily Nkomo as Nala, Jamie McGregor as Timon and Rutene Spooner as Pumbaa.
The production continues Disney Theatrical Group’s long history of bringing major stage musicals to Australian audiences, following productions including Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Mary Poppins and Frozen.
