Melbourne is getting into the NFL spirit with a huge cheerleading challenge at Fed Square, where hundreds of dancers, families and sports fans will attempt to break the world record for the largest cheerleading dance.
The Melbourne Cheer Challenge will take place on Sunday 6 September, ahead of the San Francisco 49ers taking on the Los Angeles Rams at the MCG on Friday 11 September in Australia’s first NFL Regular Season Game.
The free event will see the legendary San Francisco 49ers Gold Rush Cheerleaders teach participants their signature routine before everyone takes to the floor together in an attempt to beat the current record of 1,371 people, set in Japan in 2015.

No dance experience is required, with people of all ages and abilities encouraged to get involved. Falling on Father’s Day, the event is also being billed as a fun way for families to celebrate together while becoming part of a very Melbourne moment.
Fed Square Director & CEO Katrina Sedgwick said the event was about bringing the community together.
“This is more than a world record attempt – it’s a chance for our community to come together and share in the excitement of the NFL touching down in Australia,” she said.
“Whether you’re a dancer, an NFL fan, or simply looking for a fun Father’s Day experience, everyone has a place on the dance floor alongside the 49ers Gold Rush. We’re proud for Fed Square to host what promises to be an unforgettable Melbourne moment and encourage everyone to get involved, learn the routine and help make history.”

The challenge will kick off NFL game week, with Melbourne set to host events and activations across the city before the historic MCG match.
Visit Victoria CEO Brendan McClements said the game would “kick off an extraordinary season of events” for Melbourne, with the NFL joining a packed calendar of major sporting occasions.
The Melbourne Cheer Challenge takes place at Fed Square on Sunday 6 September, with registration from 11.30am.
Participation is free, but pre-registration is essential. Head to Fed Square to register and find out more.
