Tickets are now available for Hearth Theatre’s uproarious production of the comedy classic The 39 Steps, a satirical homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s masterpiece that blends nail-biting suspense with a dash of Monty Python. It’s playing at Chapel Off Chapel from 8 March for a strictly limited two-week season,
The 39 Steps is a Tony and Olivier Award-winning farce that first took the West End by storm in 2006 before going on to have an extraordinary 9 year run -,making it the fifth-longest running play in West End history.
Directed by and starring Hearth Theatre founder Charlie Cousins (ABC’s The Doctor Blake Mysteries) alongside a talented cast including Sorab Kaikobad (ABC’s The Newsreader), Jackson McGovern (Australian Shakespeare Company’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Yvette Turner (Hearth Theatre’s Death of a Salesman) the play features just four actors portraying over 150 characters.
Drawing from the innovative rehearsal approach pioneered by renowned UK director Mike Alfreds, Hearth Theatre embraces the concept of ‘different every night.’ Rooted in disciplined improvisation, this methodology maintains the scene’s structure and spoken dialogue while allowing actors the freedom to interpret and perform their roles with spontaneity. Each night, the dynamic interactions between performers ensure that every rendition of the play is vibrant and fresh, captivating audiences with its lively energy and authenticity.
In The 39 Steps, an ordinary man’s mundane existence takes a thrilling turn when he encounters a woman claiming to be a spy. After he brings her home, she meets a tragic end, sparking a nationwide manhunt led by the enigmatic organization ‘The 39 Steps.’ As the suspense builds, audiences are treated to a riveting blend of masterful performances and ingenious stagecraft, culminating in a breathtaking finale. This captivating production promises an evening of theatrical enchantment that will leave audiences spellbound.
