A new design for Coburg’s future library and civic plaza has been revealed, marking the next step in plans for a major redevelopment in the suburb’s town centre.
The proposed $60 million Coburg Library and Piazza will feature a four storey library building connected to a new public square designed as a gathering space for the community. The concept has been selected following a design competition and is now open for public consultation.
Residents, businesses and community organisations are being invited to review the proposal and provide feedback before the project moves into the detailed design stage.
The winning concept was created by a multidisciplinary team led by Durbach Block Jaggers in collaboration with Architecture Associates and landscape architecture practice Openwork. The design was selected by an independent jury, which praised the proposal for its clear vision and strong connection to the surrounding urban environment.
According to the jury, “the overall design concept is clear and well-resolved, enriched by subtle, characterful details that enhance amenity without compromising a delightful concept.”
Plans show a contemporary library building that aims to function as more than just a place for books. The space is intended to support reading, digital learning, creative programs and community activities.
Outside, the new piazza would provide a large public area framed by seating, lawns and trees, creating a central meeting place in Coburg’s civic precinct.
The project also includes improvements to accessibility and connections through the surrounding area, with better links to nearby streets and public transport.
Once complete, the development is expected to become a key community hub for Merri-bek, bringing together learning spaces, cultural programs and outdoor public areas in one location.
Construction is expected to begin in mid 2028, with the new library and piazza scheduled to open in late 2029. In the meantime, community feedback on the concept design will help shape the next phase of planning.
