Melbourne basketball fans will get the chance to see two of the world’s best women’s teams go head-to-head this winter, with the Australian Opals set to face China in a two-game international series at John Cain Arena.
The matches, scheduled for 7 and 9 July, arrive just months before the FIBA Women’s World Cup tips off in Germany, giving Australian supporters an early look at the national side as preparations ramp up for one of the sport’s biggest events.
The series brings together two highly ranked basketball nations and adds another major international sporting event to Melbourne’s crowded calendar.

Basketball Australia CEO Matt Scriven said the matches would be a valuable opportunity for local fans.
“This event is a fantastic opportunity to welcome China to Australia and see two world-class programs go head-to-head.
“We’re proud to be bringing another major international women’s sporting event to Melbourne while continuing to showcase the strength of basketball in Australia.”
The Victorian Government has also backed the series, with Premier Jacinta Allan highlighting both the sporting and economic benefits of hosting the games.
“This is another slam dunk for Victoria, with two of the highest-ranked teams facing off right here in Melbourne.”
“This is a win for our visitor economy – filling our hotels, restaurants, bars, and showcasing Victoria to millions of viewers around the world.”
Alongside the international fixtures, the She Hoops Festival of Girls will be held to support participation and development opportunities for women and girls across Australian basketball.
Opals legend Lauren Jackson said events like these continue to drive the sport’s growth.
“The growth of women’s basketball in Australia continues to build incredible momentum, and events like this are a huge part of that,” said Jackson.
